School career in a new language: Podcast Operation Passed

Suppose tomorrow you move to a country where you know neither the language nor the local customs. How would you react? Every year hundreds of young people enter Ghent who can join an OKAN class. In such a reception class for newcomers who speak foreign languages, young people learn Dutch and at the same time find their way around Ghent and Belgian customs and traditions. Ruben Vanhee is a teacher in an OKAN class at VISO and explains what makes such a class so special. From the Ghent Education Center, Ruben and his colleagues are supported by Steven Delarue, who also sits at the table.

When the step from OKAN to regular education is taken, it is sometimes very difficult. The classes are larger, the pace is higher, the individual supervision is less. Fortunately, there are secondary school coaches such as Ruben Feys of KTA-GITO Groenkouter, who not only guide young people but also school teams. Two former OKAN students, Ayoub and Eric, tell their story.

In this episode you will discover, among other things, how we can translate the personal feeling of an OKAN class into regular education, why you should pay attention to your language as a teacher and how OKAN is more than a language immersion.
