Bertus Aafjes, A journey on foot to Rome (1946): Listening and reading skills poem
On March 31, 1936, Bertus Aafjes (1914 - 1993), who was then 21 years old, left his native city of Amsterdam on a pilgrimage to Rome by bicycle. On the way he had to abandon his bicycle and continue on foot. He arrived in Rome on May 12, 1936. Ten years later the long poem A Foot Journey to Rome was published, which immediately became a bestseller.
